Building Alliances pt1
Group Game Studio Project
In class this week we were told that for this project we would be working in randomly assigned groups and working together on a chosen brief to create an idea for a game. We would be working together in different roles to produce research, concepts, design work and assets that would build up the concept of a game we are aiming to create.
We were given multiple briefs to pick from including 1. a game about the effects of global warming based in Nottingham 2. a game about microplastics and the effects this has on food chains 3. a game about the Sahara desert and the natural green lands returning.
Once in our groups, we had to think up some roles and decide which team member would take which role. We would all be helping each other with all elements of this project however, we all had to take main responsibility for a role that would be our main focus for the duration of the game design process. Each role provides its own impact to the project and it is our responsibility to figure out a dynamic to produce the best end result in partnership with each other.
Roles
2D lead- Sean
3D lead- Louie
Director- Jacob
Research- Archie (me)
Once we were in our group, we discussed each others likes and dislikes as well as strengths and weak points to ensure the right roles were going to each member of the team. For an example, I don't particularly enjoy 3D and I know my skills lack in that department so I suggested that role should go to somebody else. I do however enjoy creating ideas and supporting other people in their design work so I was happy to take on the role of research lead. We needed to also create a name for our team so we could be identifiable. We discussed for a while and came up with Wellow Studios.
Now we all understood each other and what our dynamic as a team would be like, we needed to work on the legal side of the project and complete some NDAs and contracts of engagement which we all agreed too and signed together. This is to ensure we all have an understanding of the process within the industry and are committed to this projects completion equally. It also makes sure we've taken all legal and environmental possibilities into account.

We now had to collectively review the possible approaches we can take to this project and decide which brief appealed to us all and what we could create from it. We discussed games we already enjoyed together and landed on a game that has similarities to Resident Evil and zombie shooters such as Left 4 Dead or Back 4 Blood. We decided the microplastics project had a lot of room within it for creative freedom and could be lead in the direction of an apocalyptic shooter style project. We liked the idea of having a survivor or group of exploring some kind of landscape in an apocalyptic world where microplastics have caused mutations within various animals.
